The Music

This page details past and present music projects I’ve been involved in. I hope to get this section very detailed, as much to preserve my own memory as well as those involved in them and anyone who may have come across us.

Admittedly, I am no solo artist. On a few rare occasions I have played a little background acoustic guitar in a few odd places alone. I started late in life with guitar, in college after my body gave football up. I quickly found a few people to play with and went through a few early garage bands. Sometime around 1990 the late great Mike Pope joined me and drummer Brian Robbins and formed Travelin’ Lite out of Vicksburg, MS. At that time I picked up the bass and filled that position. We had a pretty good run and I don’t think either Brian or I will ever forget Popey Joe, Vicksburg won’t either. I think the whole town still misses him.

studio2Right when Travelin’ Lite was really taking off, my father became ill and I moved back to Memphis. There I joined a few mutual friends from Vicksburg and we formed Riverside. Riverside was really a Blues Fusion band for lack of a better category. A bit like Cream, a little bit of Memphis blues, and just enough funk and 7 minute jams to make it interesting. It was in this environment that I truly found myself on the bass. I moved to a 5 string and eventually 6 trying to keep up with the frenzy of guitar coming from Greg Baioni. We had a good run as well opening up a few festivals, playing a few bars and even the Orpheum in Memphis.

After Riverside ran it’s course, I found myself in Chattanooga, TN and I’m still here. I kicked around a bit with a few guys I met but that didn’t last long and was one of the strangest things I’ve ever been party to. I eventually answered an add in the paper for a bass player and that’s where I met Tim Lemacks. After that band fell, which is a whole story in itself I’ll share in an article here sometime, Tim and I wound up sticking together and here we still are.

studio3Currently I write and record my own material and am always looking to explore new concepts.

There is a plethora of un-recorded music of mine, both solo work and with Tim Lemacks. And one of my main goals is to get it all recorded before I’m too old to bend my fingers anymore. But who knows what tomorrow brings, it’s been a long strange trip in the music business for me, from part time, to full time, and back to part time, endless nights and endless stories, all of which that I can still remember I hope to share on this site. So stay tuned, anything could happen.

About the Songs Currently in the MP3 Player

Everyday (2006)

Written, recorded, engineered and produced by David Flowers. All instruments performed by David Flowers except lead guitar by Tim Lemacks.

Ship (1997)

Written by David Flowers, Arranged by Tim Lemacks and David Flowers, Recorded by David Flowers, Produced by Tim Lemacks and David Flowers, Engineered by David Flowers.

This is the original version of the song from back in the day when computer based recording was in its infancy and so were our collective engineering skills. However, the only reason I expose the world to my vocals and the lack-luster quality of the engineering on this song, as it was originally recorded is to display Tim’s lead work on the guitar. It’s always impressed me as sweet and melodic.

Tim Lemacks

Tim Lemacks, in my opinion is one of the most well rounded guitarists I have ever had the pleasure of playing with. There is only person I have seen comparable to Mike Pope of Vicksburg, MS in executing either a furious or sweet melodic lead on an acoustic guitar, Tim is it. His electric playing can be as equally violent or in the pocket of a melody as you will find.
Tim is currently active, as always, with Tim & Dave and Burks United Methodis Church

Tim & Dave

As you have no doubt guessed, Tim & Dave are Tim Lemacks and me. Tim and I have been playing and writing together for what must be close to 15 years now. I guess at this point we’ve turned out a few good songs together. But we’ve got enough for an anthology in unfinished songs we’ll get to one of these days. Real life keeps us both hopping and again, our challenge is to get it all recoreded.

But this I will tell you, there is a chemistry when we both grab an acoustic and just start playing. Neither of us were born singers but we’ve both forced ourselves and each other to do it out of sheer frustration with egos and idiosyncrasies that undoubtedly come as part of a package with the dreaded “lead singer”.

I guess if anything would sum it up it would be that we have both grown as a result of playing together. We’ve pushed each other and encouraged each other, I believe there is more to come of this than has already come, and through it we have forged a friendship that will outlast our numerous platinum hits.
